Dr. Johnson has worked over 20 years in marketing communication and 15 more years teaching the topic.

His professional roles include having been an account executive for a small ad agency, a direct marketing manager for a large publishing company, and an advertising manager for a small periodical.

In 1972 Dr. Johnson earned a B.P.A. (Bachelor of Professional Arts) in color and illustration from Brooks Institute of Photography. In 1979 he earned an M.A. in mass communication from Wheaton Graduate School—his thesis was based on his survey, profiling the donors of a nonprofit organization. In 1995 he earned a Ph.D. in mass communication from the University of Alabama—his dissertation was on the meaning of typography in corporate logos.

Dr. Johnson is the executive director of the North Carolina Association of Scholars and a board member of the Raleigh-Durham Ad Club (AAF-RD). He is a life member of the Gideons International and the National Rifle Association.
